Nigeria's Globacom is said to be close to signing a USD100 million network upgrade contract with an equipment supplier.

The move is aimed at improving network quality in light of the ongoing complaints, and follows on from a recent statement by the market leader, MTN that it plans to spend U$3 billion over the next three years on network upgrades.

Globacom's head of operations Bisi Koleosho told local news media that the company has already swapped out the network in Abuja, Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Lagos amongst others.

Some 3,000 sites are involved in the current network upgrade.

"Currently, 43 percent of our telecoms sites in the country are 3G. In the next six months, we will have 90 percent 3G coverage in Nigeria", he stated.
