India 's Bharti Airtel has announced that it will restart the 3G roaming service that it had been ordered to shut down last year.
Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular had signed agremeents to allow inter-circle roaming for those parts of the country where each network lacked coverage, but this was banned by the government.
The mobile networks appealed, and last week the Telecoms Tribual threw out the government\'s case and was critical of the government\'s stance in the matter.
Although the government can appeal, the mobile networks were expected to resume 3G roaming again, and Airtel is the first to confirm that.
The 3G roaming is being made available to prepay customers immediately, and will be expanded to contract customers shortly.
The service expands Airtel\'s effective 3G coverage to Haryana, Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, MPCG (Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh), Gujarat, Kolkata and UP (east).
