Argentina's Nextel has reportedly made 10 percent of its staff redundant, equating to around 150 job losses at the company.
The move, which is reported by local media to have set off a storm of protest has now involved the Ministry of Labour which stepped into order mandatory conciliatory talks.
Under the move, the redundancies have to be reversed for a period of 15 days, and the company has to engage with the telecoms labour union, Foetra.
The company said that the layoffs were a necessary cost cutting measure in light of the changes in the industry.
The company has around 2 million mobile subscribers, but was unable to expand its services after losing out in a spectrum auction in 2012.
