An actor who gained fame for a long running series of adverts promoting Verizon's mobile phone service is back on screen again working for a rival phone company.

Paul Marcarelli appeared in Verizon advertisements for nearly a decade during the 2000s with the company's catchphrase "can you hear me now?".

He reapeared on TV during the widely watched NBA Finals on Sunday in an advert titled "Paul Switched."

Marecarelli dropped a new phrase: "Can you hear that?

After mentioning that he's moved to Sprint, Marcarelli goes on to say that, "guess what, it's 2016, and every network is great. In fact, Sprint's reliability is now within 1% of Verizon."

Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure told USA Today in an interview: "Our goal is basically to get people when they're watching our ads or watching social media to pay attention.... I think a lot of people are going to recognize Paul and see (him) in a (Sprint-colored) yellow tee show and ask themselves, `what happened?'"

The Sprint ad concludes with Marcarelli saying, "So I switched to Sprint and millions more have too. Can you hear that?"
