Samsung Working on Stand-Alone Smartwatch

Samsung is understood to be taking its smartwatch concept to the next logical step and will launch a watch that includes a mobile voice call facility built into the device.
At the moment, the Samsung smartwatches need to use a smartphone to act as the main radio unit. The new device, thought to be called a "Gear Solo" could be launched as early as the end of next month, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The smartwatch is thought to come with an embedded SIM card, which would make it harder for customers to switch mobile networks, and thus maybe a more desirable product for the networks to support the sales.
As initial smartwatches have a need to tether a link to the smartphones, they are treated more like wearable devices than a genuine smartwatch that people had been expecting when talk of such devices emerged.
In fact, voice calls though a watch have been possible for some years, with very early GSM phones built into watches launched by LG several years ago.
The smartwatch is slowly catching up with its 2G predecessor.
