The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has confirmed that it has suffered a customer data leak according to local media reports.
According to the reports, the leak of customer data is limited to customers who registered on its forum website before August 2012. It didn't say how many customers had been affected by the problem.
The company issued an apology and assured its users that it has now encoded personal data registered before that time.
The company also denied claims that hackers had obtained the personal information of 8 million users for malicious use. User data was managed by an outsourced company at that time and Xiaomi switched all user information to another encoded system from August 2012, the company said.
The company has sent out an email to all the affected customers notifying them of the leak, and changing their passwords.
