Apple has confirmed that a quantity of its iPhone 5 smartphones have shipped to customers with a faulty component that can affect the sleep wake button.
Apple said in a statement that a "small percentage" of the iPhone 5S handsets were affected by manufacturing problems. The outcome is that the smartphone's sleep/wake button stopped working or would only work intermittently.
It said it would replace the sleep/wake mechanism in affected phones free of charge. The faulty button is believed to affect iPhone 5 handsets manufactured before May 2013.
The replacement programme begins in the USA on 28 April and rolls out worldwide on 2 May.
The company has set up a website where iPhone users can enter their serial number to see if it is an affected model.
