Amazon has long been rumoured to be preparing to launch its own range of smartphones to compliment its existing tablets and the rumours appear to be firming up with the latest news of an agreement with a US mobile network.

Amazon is likely, according to reports, to offer the phone with its own mobile data plans, which will be offered exclusively through AT&T in the USA. Other countries seem to be unmentioned at the moment.

The mobile data tariff, tentatively known as "Prime Data" to match the other Amazon Prime services will be offered as one of the key selling features of the Amazon smartphones.

It is speculated by BGR that the Prime Data could be a variant of AT&T's sponsored data service where content owners pay the mobile data costs associated with content downloads. That would fit in with Amazon's previous offers with its early Kindle ebooks where it picked up the mobile data costs of downloading books.

The details are still scarce, but Amazon is widely expected to announce its new phones within the next few months.

The phones are themselves said to be high-end models, and may feature 3D display screens.
