Google may be preparing to switch suppliers for its next Nexus branded Android tablet, with Asus losing out to a rival supplier.

Asus has supplied the first two generations of Nexus tablet, but citing supply chain sources, DigiTimes is reporting that HTC could have secured the order for the next upgrade model.

Google reportedly contacts HTC in the past, but the search engine firm appears to impose additional restrictions on suppliers that meant HTC, preoccupied with its smartphone development was not willing to sign up to.

Meanwhile, Asus is in the opposite situation, and wants to branch out into customised smartphones, which put its relationship with Google on hold.

The third-generation Nexus tablet is expected to be released in the third quarter of this year.

There is also speculation that this could be the last of the Nexus branded tablets, as the purpose, to grow the overal tablet market has now been achieved.
