Google has continued its investment in unusual technologies, with the acquisition of a solar powered flying drone developer that aims to deliver internet access to rural areas.
Titan Aerospace has developed a high-altitude plane that can fly for up to 5 years at around 20 kilometers above the target area.
"It's still early days, but atmospheric satellites could help bring Internet access to millions of people, and help solve other problems, including disaster relief and environmental damage like deforestation." the company said.
While little is known about Google's intentions for the company, it has been working on using high-altitude balloons to deliver internet services to underserved areas. The key difference is that the aircraft are designed to hover over a set areas, whereas the balloons are designed to free float, more akin to a low-altitude satellite constellation.
As regards the Google deal, no details were given by the company, other than to confirm the deal had taken place.
