Telenor Considers Taking Full Ownership of Indian Subsidiary

Note -- this news article is more than a year old.

Norway's Telenor is considering raising its stake in its Indian subsidiary to full ownership, but will not until the ongoing regulatory uncertainly is resolved.

Telenor's Asia head, Sigve Brekke told the Economic Times that the company is considering raising its stake in Uninor now that full ownership by foreign companies is permitted.

However, he said that there still needs to be clarity on the rules for future mergers and on the issue of radio spectrum sharing or trading between networks.

The rules on mergers and acquisitions are still being worked out, but are expected to spark a wave of consolidation in the market when they are ready as struggling smaller operators take the chance to sell up.

Telenor is not alone in looking to increase their Indian states, as Vodafone has recently secured permission to raise its holding in its Indian network to full ownership.
