Siemens Wins Chinese GSM Order

Chinas' second biggest mobile operator - China Unicom has selected Siemens Mobile for the expansion of its mobile networks and services. The total value of the signed contract is US$84 million. The contract covers the expansion of mobile networks in the provinces of Beijing, Shangdong, Liaoning and Jilin. The network implementation is expected to be completed by the end of 2003.

The contract marks the biggest GSM network expansion project in the history of Beijing Unicom, the branch of China Unicom, that covers the densely populated area around the Chinese capital. This measure will significantly increase the capacity of the network by more than one million users and enhance the capability of the network to meet the market demand. Siemens mobile will upgrade the existing equipment with latest software releases and enhanced technology for base stations. In addition, the Intelligent Network in Shanghai will be expanded with new services."
