Support for Cell Phone Ban in New Jersey

A survey by the USA based Quinnipiac University has found that 84% of New Jersey based respondents support a ban on driving while using a cell phone. Voters support 84 -- 15 percent a proposed statewide ban on hand-held cell phones while driving. While 73% of New Jersey voters own a cell phone, only 17% say they use them "very often" while driving, and 25% say they use them "sometimes" while driving. And 51% of cell phone owners say they already use hands-free phones while driving.

But even cell phone owners support the ban 84 -- 15 percent.

Such a ban would make roads and highways safer, 83% of voters say. But only 38% say such a ban would be "very easy" or "somewhat easy to enforce," while 60% say it would be "somewhat difficult" or "very difficult."

"Even though more than four in 10 New Jersey cell phone owners make calls from their cars, the overwhelming majority of voters -- 84% -- say hand-held cell phones should be banned while driving. While voters say a ban on using cell phones when behind the wheel would make for safer driving in New Jersey, they admit it would be hard to enforce such a law."
