New Mobile Licenses Granted in the Cayman Islands

The government of the Cayman Islands has issued nine telecoms licenses, breaking the local monopoly held by Cable & Wireless. The Cayman Islands authorities received 21 applications for licenses, although this was reduced to 18 following the merger of four of the bidders.

The winners are Irish Digicel, AT&T Wireless, Cellular One, CaymanTel, Aviation Communications, Blue Sky, GrandTel, Weststar TV and TeleCayman. It was not detailed which licenses were granted to which companies, although it can be presumed that Digicel, AT&T Wireless and Cellular One applied for mobile licenses.

The mobile license holders will be able to start commercial services from February next year."
