Motorola Deploys Circuit Core
Motorola has announced the launch and first commercial deployment of its new GSM communications circuit core, the Motorola Telephony Server for GSM (MTS-G). Installation of this 2G circuit core is part of the end-to-end system Motorola is deploying for M-Tel, the Nigerian state telephone operator, to complete the second phase of its GSM network expansion.
Under terms of the contract Motorola is providing a complete solution of circuit core, packet core and radio access network (RAN), including the Motorola Horizon base stations that will expand M-Tel's 900/1800 MHz network countrywide and increase capacity to more than 1.3 million subscribers. The expansion is expected to be completed by the end of 2003.
Motorola's 2G circuit core, the MTS-G, is highly CapEx efficient with a comprehensive feature set and is part of Motorola's GSM System Circuit (GSC) solution which also includes the Home Location Register (HLR) and management system (OMC-S). The MTS-G is extremely scalable to handle subscriber and traffic growth as an operator's market develops. In addition to this incremental capacity investment approach Motorola's MTS-G also provides significant savings in capital and operating expenses through its flexible networking configurations and small footprint. The high capacity, rich feature set and full intelligent network (IN) support of Motorola's MTS-G also enables faster time to revenue for operators.
"Motorola has a strong presence in and commitment to Nigeria, as indicated by the opening of our office in Lagos in May of last year," said Raphael Udegou, GTSS country manager, Motorola Nigeria. "By working with M-Tel to strengthen its network and service offering, Motorola will contribute to the vibrant growth of the Nigerian mobile telecoms market, which will inevitably benefit the end-user."
The Motorola Telephony Server for GSM is part of Motorola's strategy of switching solutions which also includes the introduction earlier this year of the Motorola SoftSwitch for CDMA (MSS-C), further enhancing Motorola's portfolio of end-to-end network solutions for operators worldwide."
