New Multimedia Chip from Emblaze

The Israeli company, Emblaze Semiconductor has announced the launch of the company's latest mobile multimedia system-on-a-chip product, the ER4525, the 3rd generation of the company's mobile multimedia and applications processors.

Featuring video capture at CIF size (at high frame rate), extended digital audio and general-purpose processing power, in a smaller footprint and lower cost than competing chips, the ER4525 is designed and optimized for power and space-constrained devices such as cellular phones, communicators and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

The ER4525 incorporates the ARM926EJS core running at 240MHz with advanced imaging, video and graphics hardware accelerators and a comprehensive set of interfaces for superior multimedia performance at low power consumption. It is manufactured in 0.13 micron CMOS process, and comes in a 11 by 11 mm package. The ER4525's enhanced multimedia capabilities include MPEG-4 video capture and playback at CIF resolution, JVT video decoding, 1.3 Mpixel still image capture and enhanced graphics engine with VGA-size LCD support. This combination makes it the leading IC for mobile application processors.

The ER4525 package includes an open development platform and a wide range of bundled multimedia applications, giving phone manufacturers and system integrators access to the full multimedia experience "out of the box," while enabling additional advanced applications. It enables phone makers to run an open OS (Operating System) and create rich multimedia smart mobile phones. The ER4525 is a highly integrated device providing glueless interface to a wide range of system peripherals, thereby reducing the overall system cost and enabling a fast time to market with a complete solution.

"Amid the recent sharp growth in market demand for advanced multimedia functions in mobile phones, the ER4525 provides the best feature set and performance levels, yet it is smaller and less expensive than its competitors," said Alon Ironi, CEO, Emblaze Semiconductor. "Leveraging from our past experience with handset makers, the ER4525 is the most advanced application processor in the market today. No other chip offers similar functionality in such as small size and low power consumption yet at this level of processing power. Most important, the ER4525 makes the best overall Bill of Material (BOM) cost."
