WLAN Roaming Trial Begins in Asia

The four members of the Wireless Broadband Alliance have started a pilot trial for wireless broadband roaming. The four networks are Malaysia's Maxis, Australia's Telstra, China Netcom and Singapore's Starhub. The trial will enable wireless broadband customers from these operators to roam internationally, at no additional charge, at hundreds of these companies' wireless broadband hotspots under the Alliance. Korea Telecom, the other founding member, is expected to participate in the pilot trial by the end of the year.

"As Maxis is constantly looking for ways to enhance its customers' user experience, we are pleased that our customers can now enjoy wireless broadband roaming trial in Australia, China and Singapore. Furthermore, during this trial period until end October 2003, no roaming charge will be imposed.

"On top of this, customers will have the opportunity to undergo a user-friendly experience in a foreign network that offers them the familiarity of the Maxis' Wireless LAN service back home," said Maxis' Senior General Manager and Managing Director of Enterprise Business Division, Encik Darke M Sani.

With regard to the Alliance's increased membership, Darke said, "The commitment of the Alliance is reflected in the amazing way in how the Alliance has progressed. Within such short span of only four months, the Alliance now has additional member operators such as BT, T-Mobile in UK and T-Mobile in the US. With the growing membership round the world, Maxis' Wireless LAN customers can look forward to consistent user experience and quality of service whenever they roam within the growing number of Alliance countries," he added."
