Vodafone to Use Green Electricity for its Base Stations
Vodafone says that it is going to start using green electricity for all its antenna installations in the Netherlands. Green energy is generated from biomass and waterpower and does not introduce any further carbon dioxide (CO2) into the environment.
The antenna installations consume some 25,000 megawatt-hours each year. This is half Vodafone's total energy use in the Netherlands. The antennas' electricity consumption is similar to that of a small town of almost 8000 households. By switching to green energy, Vodafone will halve its CO2 emissions, about 13,250 tons per year. In the light of the experience acquired with this large-scale electricity supply, Vodafone will consider using green energy in other parts of the company as well. This unique initiative is in line with Vodafone's extensive corporate social responsibility programme. So, for example, Vodafone recently launched active programmes involving the recycling of old mobile telephones and the optimum integration of antennas into the landscape."Posted to the site on 17th June 2003
