Belarus Network Passes Subscriber Landmark

Belarus' Velcom says that it has passed the 500,000 subscriber mark. From the beginning of the current year over 95,000 people have become Velcom subscribers. The growth of the subscriber base in comparison with the similar period of the last year amounted to 157%.

"Surpassing of the 500-thousand mark is an important stage in the history of our company and a significant event for the whole Republic", said Yuri Akimov, general director of the company. "We are proud being the first company in the Republic that introduced cellular communications services that have changed the way of life of the hundred thousands of the citizens of the Republic. It would not be an exaggeration if we say that VELCOM has created a new world in Belarus - mobile communication world based on the advanced technologies. For today the company is recognized the leader and innovator in the telecommunication sphere in Belarus and we are not going to stop the development. Our plans include network development along with the coverage zone, introduction of new services and further improvement of the existing ones rendered to the subscribers. We are confident that only the constant striving towards quality improvement will let us to a full degree meet our clients' expectations".

The activation of the 500, 000th Velcom subscriber took place in Mogilev- capital of the region that has experienced the most active network development growth. Since the official opening of the Velcom sales and services office in Mogilev only 7 months ago, sales rate has been considerably increased. The communications in Mogilev is provided by 27 base stations, 11 of which are installed in Mogilev city and 3 in its suburb. In the near future it is supposed to install another 5 base stations so that the total number will reach 19 in Mogilev and suburb.

Furthermore, Mogilev is going to become the first regional center with a new switch installed to enlarge the network capacity in the region. The company's plans for the end of the 2003 forecast installing additional switches, respectively 1 in each regional center.

At present Velcom communications in Mogilev region is available in 10 towns: Mogilev, Bobruisk, Osipovichy, Shklov, Mstislavl, Belynichy, Gorki, Krichev, Yelizovo, and Bykhov. The next towns to be provided with Velcom communications are Chausy, Klimovichy and Kostiukovichy."
