Samsung to Make Personalised Handsets for Telefonica

Telefonica Moviles has signed an agreement with Samsung to buy personalised handsets from the South Korean manufacturer for deployment in all Telefonica's markets. According to the terms of the agreement, the two companies will collaborate so that the design and features of Samsung's new handsets take into account and are tailored to the consumption patterns and needs of the nearly 45 million customers Telefonica Moviles manages worldwide.

The collaboration will be focused, mainly, on the development of handsets capable of providing the new services that Telefonica Moviles offers its customers, including multimedia messaging (MMS) and high-speed mobile internet access via GPRS. Similarly, Telefonica Moviles and Samsung will work together on developing new content and applications, thereby increasing the level of usage of the services offered by Telefonica Moviles' operators.

The Samsung handsets included in the agreement will have MMS and Java applications download capabilities, in addition to high-resolution color screens and polyphonic ringtones.

According to Ignacio Aller, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Telefonica Moviles "Adapting Samsung's handsets to our operators' needs helps Telefonica Moviles boost customers' usage of the newest services, while it also reinforces our leadership position in the Spanish and Portuguese speaking market."
