Maldives Gets International SMS Facility

The Maldives based GSM network, Dhiraagu has introduced an international SMS service which will make it possible for DhiMobile customers in the Maldives to send SMS messages to overseas mobile numbers. The service was inaugurated by His Excellency President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom at a ceremony held at the Male' Kulhivaru Ekuveni Cricket Grounds.

There is no need to register or pay a setup or monthly fee for the service. Each international SMS sent will be charged US$0.15. At launch DhiMobile customers in the Maldives will be able to send SMS messages to customers of 44 mobile operators in 24 countries. More countries and operators will be added over the coming months with priority being given to countries frequently visited by Maldivians.

Dhiraagu CEO, Ismail Waheed said, "I know many DhiMobile customers have been looking forward to this day and I want to thank them for their patience and understanding while we worked with our suppliers to solve the complicated technical and billing issues that had been preventing us from offering this service". He added, "I am confident our customers will welcome this new convenient and cost-effective way of communicating with their friends and loved ones overseas."
