Worlds Smallest GSM Antenna Switch

TriQuint Semiconductor has introduced the world's smallest GSM front-end antenna switch module, the first of a family of modules designed for use in next-generation, low profile multi-band GSM, GPRS, and EDGE phones.

"This new module fulfills a key objective to use elements from TriQuint's Technology Portfolio to create innovative, value-based solutions for our customers -- competitively priced and with increased RF performance," said Brian Balut, TriQuint Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "We'll deliver consistent quality and on-time delivery through our vertically integrated supply chain."

The dual-band switch module provides a significant size advantage over antenna switch modules now in production. TriQuint's module integrates antenna switching and low pass filtering functions with increased electro-static discharge (ESD) protection needed for dual-band GSM, GPRS, and EDGE phones. All this come in a package measuring 3.7mm x 3.2mm (11.8 sq. mm) -- fully 45% smaller than low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) solutions.

"TriQuint's new dual-band antenna module is also the clear winner when it comes to volume reduction, a factor that's extremely important to next-generation phone design. Our module is only 14.2 cu. mm, compared to 38.9 cubic mm for LTCC-based solutions. That's a reduction of more than 60%," said Balut.

"TriQuint is the only domestic manufacturer that supplies all of the key components necessary for a completely integrated GSM front-end solution, including: SAW filters, pHEMT switches, ESD chips, GaAs HBT amplifiers, and GaAs integrated passive devices. With its competitive price and performance advantages, plus significant height and size reductions compared to traditional PIN-diode LTCC solutions, TriQuint's new GSM dual-band antenna switch module is the clear winner," said Balut."
