Mexico Gets Another GSM Network

Telefonica says that it has opened its GSM network in Mexico, in four cities. The cities, with a combined population of 30 million are Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara and Tijuana. The company has secured some 1,400 retail outlets to promote its GSM service.

Telefonica already has some 2.4 million subscribers to its CDMA network - although it is not immediately apparent if the company is planning on a pro-active migration strategy to move from CDMA to GSM. The GSM network was rolled out in just seven months. The company says that it aims to cover 40 of Mexico's main cities and main roads by the end of this year.
