Motorola Increases Chinese Investments
Motorola has donated US$1.4 million worth of communications equipment and employee donations to China in support of the effort to combat the spread of SARS. Resources donated by Motorola will be mainly delivered to the Logistic Guarantee Group under the National SARS Control and Prevention Headquarters. Included in the donation are the previously announced Motorola equipment and resources worth US$350,000 million as well as donations worth US$600,000 million recently raised from local and foreign staff in the company.
"The generous donation from Motorola and its employees give us great support in resources as well as spirit in our fight against SARS. This represents a fine model for all the foreign enterprises in China," said Ou Xinqian, Vice Chairman of National Development and Reform Commission. "The fact that Mr. Mike Zafirovski made a long trip to China during this difficult time is evidence of Motorola's confidence in China's economy as well as Motorola's commitment to business development in China. This confidence is based on Motorola's deep rooted investment in China and its close cooperation and partnership with the Chinese government and enterprises."
Mr. Zafirovski, Motorola's president and chief operating officer also signed a MOU with the China government pledging that Motorola will invest US$90 million to establish a research company in Beijing. The research company is expected to spend US$500 million in human resources and equipment within five years. "China is an important market for Motorola worldwide as well as a manufacturing base and research center for the company," Zafirovski noted."
