SonyEricsson to Develop Rugged Telematics Module

Sony Ericsson says that it has commenced the development of a new Rugged Cellular Communication Module, the GM46, intended for embedded applications where operation in harsh environments is a requirement, such as Automotive and Industrial applications. The GM46 will be a tri-mode module capable of operating in GSM, AMPS, and TDMA. It will also support class 8 GPRS packet data communications, which along with its tri-mode and ruggedness features, will make it unique in the industry.

"The GM46 is Sony Ericsson's response to the consistent market demand for reliable communications coverage for moving platforms such as Automobiles, Trucks, Trailers, etc, over the North American Continent," says Anders Franzen, Corporate Vice President and head of Sony Ericsson's Machine to Machine Communications Unit. "It will enable the mass roll-out of Telematics Services by facilitating a rapid migration to the GSM standard in the North American market."

The GM46 will make it possible to integrate Telematics Grade applications using GSM/GPRS as the primary Digital bearer with AMPS (analog cellular) available as a fall back for areas with limited GSM coverage."
