Fourth GSM Network Launched in Laos
Millicom launched a GSM service in the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos) last week, under the Tango brand name. Tango is the fourth entrant to the GSM market in Laos and it is operating a pre-paid service for GSM 900 and 1800 frequencies under a 20- year license. Distribution will take place through a dealer network of more than 100 outlets.
Tango offers coverage in the capital Vientiane and in the second largest town of Savannakhet and coverage of the main tourist area of Luang Prabang is expected to follow in the second quarter of 2003. Value-added services offered include SMS and Tango is the first network to offer International roaming to visitors from a wide range of countries.
Marc Beuls, President and CEO of Millicom International Cellular commented: "The launch of services in Laos bolsters our cellular offering in South East Asia and will facilitate the development of regional synergies. The Tango service is targeted towards the under 30 age-group which comprises 68% of the population of Laos and Millicom is confident of building a significant market share."
