MTN Orders SIM's with Larger Capacity

Bluefish Technologies has won a contact to supply 32Kb SIMs to MTN Uganda in support of new Information Services being made available to its subscribers. Subscribers simply pick from an extensive menu of services and content is delivered to the phone using the SMS channel.

Bluefish's SIM Toolkit technology provides a simple to use scrolling menu that delivers information and content on demand. In this case MTN Uganda has used two local content providers to supply news and sport, foreign currency and exchange information, commodity prices, movie news, TV schedules, radio station frequencies, inspiration, plus chat and e-mail. Subscribers can even choose which content provider they receive the information from.

The MTN 900/1800 GSM network in Uganda went live in October 1998 and now provides a combination of fixed line and wireless coverage to over 95% of the urban population.

Bluefish is already supplying other African networks with SIM based solutions notably MTC in Namibia and the Investcom networks, Spacefon in Ghana Spacetel in Guinea, Spacetel Benin, Spacetel Burundi and Lonestar Communications in Liberia. Bluefish is also providing consultancy to MTN in South Africa to advise on specifications for the provision of value added services to its 4 million plus subscribers."
