AT&T Wireless Expands US Footprint Through Roaming Agreements

On the heels of announcing a major roaming accord with Cingular Wireless, AT&T Wireless said that, in the past year, it has signed domestic GSM/GPRS roaming agreements with another 22 USA based GSM network operators. The agreements further expand AT&T Wireless' next generation roaming capabilities in mostly rural areas of 30 states. Roaming service is targeted to be available in most of these areas by the end of 2003.

AT&T Wireless' GSM network currently covers a U.S. population of about 188 million people and is on track to reach 214 million people by year-end, not including the areas covered by the new roaming agreements.

"We've signed a number of important GSM roaming agreements as a cost-efficient way to supplement our own new nationwide next generation network and further enhance the coverage we offer customers," said Robert Stokes, Senior Vice President - Business Development, AT&T Wireless. "By carefully targeting our GSM roaming agreements to complement our own network, we can offer customers all the benefits of the GSM world technology standard whether at home, work, or play."

"Customers of our next generation services already get quality, widespread coverage both at home and abroad. In addition, our U.S. roaming agreements allow us to expand service to rural and other targeted areas not included in our network footprint."
