Shanghai's Main Road Tunnel Gets GSM Coverage

Andrew Corporation has recently completed a distributed communications project for China Mobile's, Shanghai Mobile subsidiary, that extended GSM coverage throughout the Yan'an East Road Tunnel in the downtown area of Shanghai, including the section of road tunnel running beneath the Huangpu River. The extended GSM system enables Shanghai's mobile phone users to maintain their phone connections within over two kilometers of road tunnel.

Shanghai is China's largest city and its financial center and has over six million mobile phone subscribers. The Yan'an East Road Tunnel is an important transportation artery, giving traffic from downtown Shanghai and the city's Pudong Airport easy access to Shanghai's Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone.

The completed communications system included installation of over four kilometers of Andrew RADIAX RCT7 coaxial cable and associated connectors in the Huangpu River section of the road tunnel. Andrew also supervised the installation, carried out connector attachment, and completed final performance testing.

"Wireless coverage in the Huangpu River tunnel section is now a showcase for the quality of Shanghai's in-tunnel communication systems," said Mr. Zhu Guangmin, Project Manager, Yan'an East Road Tunnel Coverage Project, Shanghai Mobile Communications Co. Ltd. "We are very satisfied with Andrew's high quality radiating cable products, their effective technical support, and their quick response to our requests."
