AT&T Wireless Buys into Bermuda
AT&T Wireless has purchased 60% of Telecom Bermuda's GSM network. Financial terms were not disclosed. The company has started immediate work to enhance voice capacity and quality in Bermuda. In 2003, an upgrade to the network will bring GPRS data services to the network.
"Our investment in Telecom Bermuda's GSM business goes to our strategy of expanding the AT&T Wireless next-generation network to locations where our customers work, live, and play," said Stephanie Bariault, Vice President and General Manager for AT&T Wireless Caribbean Services. "Bermuda is a hub for financial and insurance services and attracts a substantial number of business visitors from the U.S., Canada, and Europe who require advanced wireless services. Telecom Bermuda was the first operator in Bermuda to launch a GSM system, perfectly complementing AT&T Wireless' new next-generation network in the United States."
"We are excited that customers in Bermuda will benefit from AT&T Wireless' entrance in the market. AT&T Wireless' heritage of offering innovative products and services and its high quality standards will be embraced by our customers. We have built a strong international business with over 130 international roaming agreements, and we look forward to extending those capabilities with AT&T Wireless," said Richard Scott, General Manager, Telecom Bermuda."
