Cell Phone Tariffs Rise in the USA
Published on:
The cost of using a cell phone in the USA rose nearly 2.8% in September, according to the research group Econ One, which studies the cost of wireless service.
Costs across the four usage levels Econ One analyzes showed a robust increase, attributable to the alteration or elimination of certain plans or promotions. The overall rise amounted to US$1.03. All 25 markets witnessed cost increases, the first time an across-the-board increase has been seen this year. Washington D.C. (4.6%), Los Angeles, Tampa, and Denver (4.0%), and Pittsburgh (3.5%) experienced the greatest increases. Chicago (1.1%), Cincinnati (1.3%), Sacramento, Philadelphia, and Cleveland (1.4%) saw the smallest increases.
These cost changes were primarily due to changes in price plans by Sprint PCS and T-Mobile. These providers ended certain promotions and introduced new promotions which affected costs mostly in the 200 and 800 minutes-of-use categories. The cost for 200 minutes increased US$1.79, while the cost of 800 minutes of use rose US$1.45.'"
