InterWAVE Wins Sri Lankan Contract

interWAVE has announced that Lanka Cellular Services, a GSM operator in Sri Lanka and a subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa will deploy three additional interWAVE WAVETransit switches as part of its ongoing network expansion for their nationwide network, which currently is deployed using interWAVE's GSM WAVEXpress GSM products. Locating the three switches in Colombo, Kandy and Galle, Lanka Cellular Services will use interWAVE's WAVETransit switches to interconnect its 'Home Zone' GSM sites and also provide access to the public telephone network. Lanka Cellular Services' nationwide network is one of interWAVE's largest deployments.

Hutchison Telecommunications International, is interWAVE's largest account, having purchased US$23 million in equipment and services for 4 networks located in Sri Lanka, Paraguay, Hong Kong and India.

"interWAVE has a long-standing relationship with Lanka Cellular Services, one of our most well-established customers," said William Carlin, VP of worldwide sales and customer service. "Deploying our WAVETransit switches would allow Lanka Cellular Services to expand their current 'Home Zone' service offering to include new services such as voice announcements. Based on subscriber demand, interWAVE's solution will also allow a seamless migration path for Lanka Cellular Services to offer mobility and a variety of new services in the future as LCS wishes."

Currently, Lanka Cellular Services is providing Home Zone GSM services in 27 towns within Sri Lanka.'"
