GSM Network Prepares for CDMA Roaming with Billing Contract

TSI Telecommunication Services (TSI) has signed a contract for UniRoam, TSI's CDMA/TDMA - GSM interstandard roaming solution with Hong Kong's CSL. In addition to the UniRoam contract, CSL also contracted for several supporting services for clearing with TDMA roaming partners, trouble-shooting for roamers and fraud prevention.

UniRoam provides signaling and billing interoperability between ANSI-41 (used in AMPS, CDMA and TDMA networks) and GSM by performing conversions for different signaling and billing formats used in the two technologies to enable seamless and automatic call validation, delivery and billing. The process is transparent to the wireless subscriber and all billing charges appear on the subscriber's regular home wireless bill.

"With the launch of UniRoam service, CSL continues to lead the Asia Pacific market in roaming capabilities for subscribers," said Richard Midgett, director of international, wholesale and regulatory at CSL. "This pioneering technology breaks the limitation of roaming between GSM and TDMA markets in our region. We are especially delighted to offer our GSM subscribers the ability to roam seamlessly from Hong Kong to North and Latin American TDMA markets, another 'first' for CSL."'"
