High Capacity 3G Base Station from Fujitsu

Japan's Fujitsu says that it has begun providing new base transceiver station equipment for DoCoMo's 3G network, since July 11. The new base stations, which have the capacity to handle more than 2,880 channels, or quadruple the capacity of existing equipment, were developed jointly by Fujitsu, Hitachi Kokusai Electric Inc. and NTT DoCoMo.

The new base station equipment uses a high-speed channel signal processor and a high-efficiency transmitter amplifier built with new distortion-compensation technology developed by Fujitsu and Fujitsu Laboratories. These components are highly compact and enable a dramatic reduction in power consumption. As a result, the equipment achieves four times the channel capacity with the same amount of power and space requirements as previous models.

The new equipment also offers the operating advantage of greater flexibility in scaling the number of channels in accordance with increases in demand. In addition to accommodating voice communications, it provides ample channels for 384-Kbps high-speed packet data transmission.

Fujitsu has developed and commercialized base transceiver station equipment for NTT DoCoMo from the earliest stages. The claim of 2,880 channels refers to the number of channels as defined by one channel per voice call. With high-speed packet communications, the bandwidth requirements will vary depending on the speed requirements for the data, so comparisons of equipment channel capacity are made in terms of the bandwidth for voice calls.'"
