Unicom Ordering More CDMA Handsets

Samsung Electronics said on Friday that it is to export US$400 million worth of handsets to China Unicom over the next three months. The company is providing some 700,000 CDMA handsets, some of which will also be compatible with the CDMA2000 1x system that China Unicom is rolling out in Beijing.

"It's a very important deal for us. The deal paves the way for us to expand handset exports to China, one of the fastest growing markets in the world," a company spokesman said.

Motorola is also understood to be in talks to supply CDMA2000 1x handsets to China Unicom, according to several local media reports over the weekend.

The CDMA2000 1X network is expected to be commercially launched early next year in an attempt to boost the company's subscriber numbers, which have fallen far short of the company's original 7 million target.'"
