Adaptive Base Stations Report 6 Fold Capacity Increase

ArrayComm says that its patented IntelliCell technology dramatically improved performance in a GSM base station during a recent demonstration. In addition to multiplying network capacity by up to 6 times, the new base station offers clearer calls, fewer dropped calls and higher data rates for cellular users. Through its licensing agreement with AirNet Communications, ArrayComm has integrated its IntelliCell smart antenna technology into AirNet's AdaptaCell base station.

AirNet recently demonstrated the SuperCapacity AdaptaCell base station for a number of potential customers at its headquarters in Melbourne, Fla. During these AirNet field tests, potential customers observed both IntelliCell adaptive-antenna-based and non-adaptive antenna-based wireless calls placed in identical conditions. The adaptive-antenna solution, using a multi-antenna array, demonstrated up to 30 dB of improvement in uplink interference rejection, a 5 dB gain in delivered power to the user of interest, and 17 dB less interference to a co-channel user. These results translate into dramatic capacity gains for GSM network operators and far lower hardware and maintenance costs, decreasing the required number of cell sites by up to six times.

Traditional cellular systems broadcast to many users; with IntelliCell technology, a "personal cell" is created for each user, follows that user while he or she communicates, and is dismantled when the user is finished. These personal cells reduce interference, allow for wider coverage, improve capacity, reduce costs and create clearer signals. AirNet's broadband, software-designed-radio base station facilitated the smooth incorporation of IntelliCell technology. As ArrayComm develops software upgrades for even better capacity and coverage gains, AirNet will be able to quickly and easily adopt those improvements.

"This demonstration is a dramatic demonstration to GSM operators of the power of ArrayComm technology in Frequency Division Duplex (FDD), or paired spectrum systems," said Sam Endy, chief operating officer of ArrayComm. "This is the first time that we have we have implemented our advanced technology on a commercialized GSM system, and AirNet is our first commercial customer in the United States, building on our long and successful track record of technology deployment with operators in Asia and the Middle East. We congratulate AirNet for this achievement, and we look forward to their deployment of the SuperCapacity AdaptaCell base station in GSM networks, the largest and growing cellular market in the world."
