Alcatel Wins Libyan Contract

The BBC has reported that Alcatel has won a GSM network expansion contract in Libya. The agreement was apparently signed by the General Posts and Telecommunications Company (GPTC) and involves the installation of a mobile phone network around Sirte. The contract will increase the network capacity by 100,000 subscriber lines. GPTC will co-operate in building the network in order to use the opportunity to increase local expertise.

Alcatel has refused to disclose the value of the contract. Alcatel also won a US$75 million equipment order in Libya in 2001.'"
