AT&T Wireless Sells Spectrum to Affiliate

Triton PCS, an affiliate of the AT&T Wireless network, has entered into an agreement to acquire PCS licenses in Richmond, Norfolk, and Roanoke, Virginia from AT&T Wireless for US$65 million.

The three 10MHz A-block licenses for the Richmond, Norfolk and Roanoke Basic Trading Areas (BTAs) cover approximately 3.7 million people. Triton PCS currently owns and operates 20MHz of the A-block license in the respective BTAs. Triton will use the additional spectrum as part of its current network overlay of GSM/GPRS services. The transaction, which requires FCC approval, is expected to close in the second half of 2002.

Triton PCS, based in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, is a provider of wireless phone service in the Southeast which is licensed to operate in a contiguous area covering about 13.5 million people in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, northern Georgia, northeastern Tennessee and southeastern Kentucky. The company markets its services under the brand SunCom, a member of the AT&T Wireless Network.'"
