Jordanian Network Orders Expansion
Jordan's Fastlink, which launched the Kingdom's first nationwide commercial GPRS service earlier this year on a Motorola network, is further increasing its wireless data subscriber base as it provides its consumers with "always on" connectivity and data speeds of up to 44 Kb/s.
In addition to the GPRS deployment, Fastlink contracted with Motorola to install an overlay GSM system on its 900 MHz network. The total value of the GPRS/GSM contract is US$29 million. Motorola will deploy its Horizonsystems GSM infrastructure solutions to expand Fastlink's nationwide network. When fully installed, the system can accommodate approximately one million subscribers.
Motorola's GPRS radio network solution includes the Serving GPRS Support Node (SSGN), supplied by Motorola Computer Group, and the Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) from Cisco Systems. Motorola's GPRS radio network can be implemented over an existing GSM network with a software load and a packet control unit (PCU) addition, which can help protect an operator's investment.'"
