Sri Lanka's telecoms minister, Harin Fernando has called for the scrapping of taxes on the sale of smartphones.

The minister says that he has suggested the move to the Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake to remove VAT and other taxes in the next budget.

He said that the move would make smartphones more affordable and hence boost their uptake in the country. The country's smartphone penetration is estimated at about 30 percent.

"While forwarding proposals for the next budget, I requested the Finance Minister to exempt VAT and other levies imposed on smartphones aiming to bring the price of smartphone down," he said.
