CDMA 1X Expanded in Canada

Canada's TELUS Mobility has expanded its CDMA2000 1X wireless network across Canada, using packet core, access and radio equipment from Nortel Networks to serve western Canada -- including Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, and Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. Lucent provided the equipment in central and eastern Canada.

"As TELUS Mobility looked to evolve our network to meet growing client demands for new mobile Internet services, we turned to Nortel Networks as a key provider of the equipment necessary for a smooth transition to 3G," said Eros Spadotto, executive vice president and chief technology officer, TELUS Mobility. "Nortel Networks IP enabled network will allow us to essentially double our voice capacity as well as offer high-quality data access capabilities."

"Nortel Networks has a long-standing relationship with TELUS Mobility, having worked with them on the first live 1X trial in 2000," said Steve Slattery, vice president, TDMA/CDMA, Nortel Networks. "Nortel Networks 1X technology enables TELUS Mobility to leverage its existing network investments, creating a cost-effective solution to support both voice and packet data services."

TELUS Mobility's CDMA2000 1X network has the capacity to serve more than 18 million Canadians in major urban centers, with services scheduled to expand to include smaller population centers and rural communities later in 2002. Roaming agreements planned for later this year will extend coverage for TELUS Mobility customers traveling in the United States.'"
