China's Xiaomi says that it has set a new record for handset sales, having sold over 2 million phones in less than a day.

The company held another of its high profile sales events, which saw the company sell 2.12 million phones to its fans to make the firm's 5th anniversary.

The fire-sale also enabled the Chinese vendor to be awarded a Guinness World Record for the most phones sold in a 24-hour period via a single online platform.

The event also saw the company sell 38,000 Mi TVs and over 770,000 smart appliances, to bring in total revenues of around USD335 million.

The company said its fan day "proved that Xiaomi is truly an Internet company, with the e-commerce model being an extremely successful way of reaching its users."

Earlier this year, Xiaomi's CEO Jun Lei announced that the company sold over 60 million smartphones in 2014, an increase of 227% over the previous year. The company has set itself a target of selling 100 million smartphones this year.
