RF Micro Supplying Components for Disposable Cellphones

RF Micro Devices has said that its power amplifier (PA) and driver amplifier have been selected by New Horizons Technologies for use in their disposable handset - the Cyclone. Volume shipments have begun and are expected to ramp to a multi-million dollar level this calendar year.

The Cyclone was created for the USA's AMPS market and comes preloaded with airtime that includes nationwide roaming and long distance, as well as a personal nationwide toll-free number. It is also refreshable, allowing more airtime to be added easily over-the-air. The phone is priced under US$40 and is available at retail chains nationwide during second quarter 2002.

"We are very pleased to provide our components into this truly next-generation disposable handset," said Greg Thompson, RFMD's director of worldwide sales. "Our circuits are high-performance, low-cost solutions and are available in volume quantities, all of which are critical in the disposable handset market. We believe handset manufacturers such as New Horizons will continue to value RF Micro Devices' technology leadership and our ability to meet production requirements at cost-competitive prices."'"
