InterWAVE Wins Third Kenyan Order
interWAVE Communications has received a third contract from Kenya's GSM network, Safaricom. Intended to expand Safaricom's coverage to key markets that are too remote to be covered by their traditional GSM infrastructure, this newest network expansion marks the third deployment that interWAVE will complete for Safaricom in under a year. interWAVE's completely self-contained, remote GSM extension solution will be connected into Safaricom's core network via compressed satellite backhaul, a specialized GSM application pioneered by interWAVE.
"We have continued to expand our network using interWAVE's technology due to the fact that it allows us to rapidly offer affordable telephony services to areas outside our core network footprint," said Michael Joseph, managing director for Safaricom. "interWAVE enables us to be first to market, allowing us to capture high-revenue subscribers quickly. We are pleased to be part of interWAVE's rapid expansion in the African market."
Utilizing compressed satellite technology for backhaul requires 50% less satellite bandwidth than other GSM solutions.'"
