Uber Sends Peace Offering to London's Black Cabs

Note -- this news article is more than a year old.

On the day that London's famous Black Cabs stage a protest against the private taxi hire app, Uber, the app developer has offered a conciliatory branch to the cab drivers.

The Black Cab drivers claim that Uber's app allows users to calculate a taxi fare in the same way that their meters do, and the use of taxi meters is a regulated service that they Cab drivers claim should not be used by the mobile app company.

It's less a dispute about the quality of the service than a dispute about protecting a legal monopoly over how a service is charged for.

However, Uber has now offered to expand its service to include Black Cabs, so that they can be added to its platform as taxis for hire.

The newly launched service would let consumers select either a private taxi, or specifically request a Black Cab instead.

It is not likely to prevent the protest though, where hundreds of Black Cabs has threatened to bring the centre of London to a halt, although the local police say that the protest is unauthorised and may seek to limit its size.
