Cellphone Tax Cut in Bangladesh
The Chinese Xinhua News Agency has reported that the Bangladesh tax collection agency, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) is to cancel a recently imposed tax on new cellphone activations. The tax of US$69.08 on each new SIM card issued was imposed, and the government had expected an increase in tax revenue. However, as new subscriptions dropped, the government actually saw a reduction in net income from the move.
Xinhua also noted that an import duty on cellphones that was introduced in March will also be reduced from US$69.08 to US$43.18. The NBR is expected to confirm the move shortly said the news agency.'"
