Oman to Boost Rural Phone Coverage

Oman's two mobile networks and the telecoms regulator have jointly agreed a programme to expand mobile coverage to 250 rural villages over the next couple of years.

Omantel and Nawras will deploy 200 base stations to cover villages that lack mobile phone service. Of those, 80 base stations will be 3G enabled, while the remainder will offer basic GSM services.

TRA spokesman, Abdul Rahman Al Mamari said that priority is being given to villages with government facilities such as heathcare or schools.

He warned though that obtaining permits for building the sites from various government organisations is one of the challenges facing the project.

The regulator will also start a project to monitor the mobile network quality in the areas being served.
