Bharti Airtel says that its Chadian subsidiary has been allocated both 3G and 4G licenses by the government of the African country.

The company said that the licence would enable Airtel, which already provides internet services across 17 African countries, to extend its 3G footprint to 16 countries.

"The granting of the Chad's first licence is an important milestone towards the development of the telecommunications infrastructure, and will facilitate better Internet access for the social and business community," Airtel said in a statement.

It did not offer any details about the price paid for the license.

Earlier this year, the government announced plans to sell an 80% stake in the state-owned mobile network, Sotel, as part of a liberalisation of the mobile market.

Mobile penetration in the country is less than 40 percent, compared with the 60-80 per cent by its neighbours, Nigeria and Cameroon.
