India's RCom Could Outsource 5,500 Customer Care Staff

India's Reliance Communications (RCom) is reportedly about to announce the outsourcing of its customer care staff in a move that could affect around 5,500 employees.
The company is under pressure to cut costs, and has decided to outsource the call centre rolls to a BPO provider, according to a report in the Economic Times newspaper.
The move follows on from outsourcing its network management functions to Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent, which saw it shift 9,500 employees to the two equipment vendors.
The outsourcing of the customer care positions could see the company cutting its internal headcount to less than 5,000 staff.
The company tried to buck the trend for outsourcing network and customer care positions to dedicated providers, preferring to keep them in-house, but the debt laden firm is now having to adopt the same lean structures followed by its rivals.
