The world's fourth largest internet company is rumoured to be considering buying a Chinese handset manufacturer.

China's Tencent, which also operates the country's equivalent of Twitter, known as WeChat is said to have held talks with several companies in a move which could theoretically see it create its own brand smartphones in the future.

Citing unnamed sources, Marbridge Consulting reported that Tencent has met with manufacturers including OnePlus Technology, IUNI Technology, Chuizi Technology, and Meizu Technology, among others.

A tie in with WeChat could offer a huge boost to the handset manufacturer if Tencent were to be looking at tighter integration of its microblogging service with smartphones, as it could promote the phones to WeChat's 600 million users.

The rumor follows previous reports claiming that Tencent is in talks with television and consumer electronics manufacturer Konka.
